My Doreys originated in Jersey, a Channel Island; the earliest known are from 1690. They moved to Arichat on Isle Madame in the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia in the early 1800s.
This page addresses the family of Elizabeth Dorey, fifth child of Philippe Dorey who was born 1753 in Jersey. Elizabeth immigrated to Nova Scotia where she married one husband, John Thomas Dixon, and had six children. Their descendants married Latimer, Lafford, Samson, Kilburn, Forest, Landry, and others.

Sibling: Arleen Kilburn, b. 5-23-1882 Norton, m. 5-23-1917 Byron Hartson WATERMAN in Providence, RI. She had 3 children and a second marriage to Charles H. GIFFORD of Attleboro. Died 2-24-1929 in Providence, RI. A word about the town of Norton, Bristol County, MA in which this family lived. The Town of Norton was incorporated in 1711 as a group of seven villages, including Chartley. While Chartley has its own post office and now zip code, the address on Worcester Street cited as being in Norton in the census below is actually in the village of Chartley, which is located less than 4 miles west of Norton Center. In 1880 Jerome R. Kilburn, 20, lived in Norton, MA with a Sturdy family, nephew, worked in jewelry, born MA to parents born MA. In 1900 Winford lived in Norton, MA with parents Jerome R. (39, b. 6-1860 MA to father born VT and mother born MA) and Caroline A. (40, b. 5-1860 MA to parents born MA), and sister Arleen (18, b. 5-1882 MA). Winford was 16 born 5-1884 MA. Parents married 20 years with 2 children. Father was a jeweler and glass pincher(?). All neighbors on the census page were jewelers. In 1909 the State of Rhode Island issued an incorporation for J. R. Kilburn Glass Company by Jerome R. Kilburn, George L. Wetherell, and George H. Desormeau. They had a capital stock of $50,000. In 1910 Winford lived in Norton, MA on Worcester St. with wife; worked in a jewelry shop. In 1917 his draft card cited his full name, birthdate. Glassworker for JR Kilburn Glass Co. at 54 Union St., Attleboro, MA. Wife Mary E. Kilburn. In 1920 lived in Norton, MA in owned home on Worcester St. with wife and her parents. In 1920 Winford's parents Jerome and Carrie lived in Chartley (Norton); Jerome was the owner of a glass factory. The 1926–27 Norton City Directory cited a J R Kilburn Glass Co Inc. with Carrie A. Kilburn vice president, Winford A. Kilburn secretary, and Jerome R. Kilburn treasurer. "mfrs Chartley" In 1930 lived in Norton, MA in owned home on South Worcester St. with wife and son; bookkeeper in glass factory. In 1930 Winford's parents Jerome and Carrie lived in Chartley (Norton) on South Worcester Street; Jerome was the owner of a glass factory. His house was worth $10,000, more than twice that of his neighbors. In 1942 his draft card repeated the 1917 data with the exception that his home and business were located at 50 Worcester St. in Norton. Winford did eventually own the glass and jewelry factory. It produced fine crystal stemware, among other pieces. By 1956 the glass business was still located in Chartley. Given that Winford and his parents were dead before this, but not his wife and son, I do not know who owned the business. The glass business became Kilburn Glass Industries, then Kilburn Isotronics Inc. with headquarters at 111 South Worcester Street, Chartley, MA. I found another address: Kilburn Isotronics Incorporated, 50 Welby Rd, New Bedford. Kilburn Isotronics was a manufacturer of hermetic power hybrid packaging as well as various other microelectronic hermetic packaging. "Selected assets" were acquired in 2005 by HCC Industries who moved the facilities to New Bedford. In 1997 the Kilburn Glass Inc. facility at 111 South Worcester Street was listed as a Superfund site # MAD001192103. Currently at that location is CPS Technologies (www.alsic.com), formerly Ceramics Process Systems, "the world leader in developing and manufacturing advanced materials solutions and products, particularly combinations of metals and ceramics, to improve performance and reliability of applications in a variety of end markets." |
