Humane

I walked by a car bearing a sticker "Meat is Murder". Well, eating meat is not murder, but what happens in the large commercial slaughterhouses is murder. Is "humane" a good word to describe how we should kill food animals?

What does "humane" mean? Kind? Compassionate? Ethical? Our culture has no standards of ethics for food production. We have completely abdicated to the corporate will for profit at any cost. Our current attitudes and behavior degrade the word "humane".

What we need is a standard that embraces our planet and all life forms on it. A standard that extends equal rights to all. A standard that gives us a framework for saying "your issue is more important than my issue".

Did the Greeks have a word for it?
